Currituck Beach Light Spiral Staircase
Sean Donnelly
August 1998 - 8"x10" black and white print
[photo 14]
Access to the lighthouse's Watch Room, Lantern Room, and Gallery deck is via opened-web cast iron steps and solid "skid proof" landings. These metal components were stamped with a numerical code during pre-assembly at the factory and re-assembled on site based on those code sequences. The spiral stairs rising from the black and white marble tile floor at the base of the lighthouse are located on the west side of the tower and were originally "free floating"--there being no connections to the adjacent walls. Today, however, reinforced brackets have been added to stabilize the stairs.
